Marcia Gay Harden, born 14 August 1959 in San Diego, California, was the daughter of Beverly who was a housewife, and Thad the US Navy officer. She is the mother to a brother, and three sisters. After settling in Maryland, Harden went to Surrattsville High School in Clinton. In 1980, she attended the University of Texas at Austin and received a bachelor's degree in acting. Harden was accepted into NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in 1988 to complete her MFA.
